TRIUMPH THROUGH ADVERSITY

David’s psalms many of which were written during his period of adversity, talk of triumph. Far too many people fall into the trap of self-pity and bitterness when they are faced with difficult situations. David’s situation was hardly encouraging. Despite being anointed by the great Samuel himself to be the king of Israel, he finds himself rather on the run from a blood thirsty king, who wants to preserve the kingship. Yet he pens words that take us deep into a place of solace, joy and triumph.

‘Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.’ Psalms 34:5

Here we see a responsive God, who does not ignore those who earnestly call on him. In a world that is increasingly being numbed by man’s electronic transactions, obtaining a response based on love is easier said than done. Yet that is what humans crave. It is evident right from birth when a newborn infant responds to the physical touch of a mother. With God we consistently see a response of love because He is love and He is faithful.

Next David refers to the protection of God. ‘The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and he delivers them.’ Psalms 34:7

We live in a spiritual-physical world, where unbeknownst to us, we interact with the spiritual world and by our decisions either align with God and his light or with the darkness that always entices. Fearing God and submitting to him becomes the basis for the force of heaven to come to your side and protect and deliver you when the darkest of times come upon you.

David goes on to talk of God’s abundant provisions for those who fear him. ‘Fear the Lord you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.’ Psalms 34:9,10

Is it not surprising that in the midst of adversity, David could talk of God’s provisions? The wisest and the strongest will be put to shame at what God provides for those who fear him and look to him for his provisions.

‘Taste and see that the Lord is good’ Psalms 34:8

This is really a summary statement of one who lives in close communion with the Lord. His responsiveness, protection and provisions are always new and never-failing. However unless one tastes it by submitting to God and his leadership over one’s life, this highest possible human experience will always remain elusive.
