THE INVISIBLE REALITY BEHIND THE PANDEMIC

In a world that has become liberal to the point of stupidity, it is unpopular to talk about a spiritual reality. But a little common sense will tell us that man is as much a spiritual being as he is a physical being. The Bible also opens our eyes to the spiritual reality surrounding us, and God who dominates that spiritual reality. And so while the pandemic and the response to it is real in the physical sense, there is a spiritual reality behind it that people need to grasp.

Aberrations in man’s required equilibrium of submission to the true God produces trouble on earth. As the Israelites made their way through the desert, around Edom, they grow impatient, and grumble against God. Consequently they find venomous snakes amidst them and many die. 

The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. (Numbers 21:7-9)

Is it not interesting that an act of faith is what cures a person, just as it was an aberration in the spiritual realm that brought on the snakes? Earlier in their experience, the Israelites experienced the spiritual foundations for the plagues that were sent upon the Egyptians, led by the God-defying Pharaoh, whereas the Israelites were selectively spared. Subsequently in their exodus, the Israelites were again subjected to a plague when they allow the Moabites to seduce them into worshipping the Baal of Peor. The number killed by the plague was substantial- 24,000 and the Bible makes it clear that the plague was a direct consequence of their sin at Peor. Again the plague was stopped when sin was dealt with and people repented (Numbers 25).

While medical, social and economic relief efforts should continue at full pace in the midst of the pandemic, a spiritual rehabilitation is as important. The collective consciousness of the people of this world has been increasingly hijacked by liberal activists, who fanatically oppose anything with a semblance of Christianity, while at the same time having no qualms about celebrating other religions, which only serve to take man away from the true God. An abundance of prosperity and opportunities in the modern day world have only made man increasingly immune to the over-arching spiritual need for salvation through Christ. The liberal anti-Christian philosophy that is served on a platter at our schools and colleges is helping raise up a generation that will have little inclination for examining the validity of Christ. The sickness in the spiritual dimension is real.

While all of this will sound as nonsense to the common man, this adversity provides an opportunity for believers across the globe to see the real disease that lurks beneath of which the current pandemic is only a symptom. The corona virus has left much suffering and death in its wake. Apart from being part of the healing and relief in a physical sense, believers need to respond to the spiritual reality behind the pandemic in two ways. First, the time to be silent in the wake of a liberal takeover of our society is over. The true Christian faith needs to be vocalized and Christian mission needs to be rejuvenated more than ever, or else much more adversity lurks near. Second, Christians all over the world are uniting in prayer like never before to limit the pandemic and pleading for their peoples. More than anything else, this will bring the pandemic to a speedy end. And in the days to come, these spiritual channels that are being established will provide means for the gospel to reach out to the ends of the earth.
