MOST VALUABLE

Man assigns value to many things in this world. Yet, the one thing that needs to be valued most is the word of God revealed to us in the Bible. John equates the word with God himself, ‘In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God’(John 1:1). God is unseen, eternal and omnipresent. He lives in dimensions we cannot grasp and has not chosen to make himself evident in the temporal-physical world we live in. This has been done so that man might live by faith, making himself truly dependent on God. While God’s revelations are scant, he has given man the word of God through the pages of the Bible, which is the closest replica we have in this world of the invisible God. Hence the value man needs to assign to the word of God needs to be the highest.

Once man recognizes the immense value of the word of God, there needs to be an apt response to it. Isaiah gives us a prototypical response to the word,

‘The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back.’ (Isaiah 50:4,5)

The word of God is very relevant to our needs, sustaining the weary and meeting our deepest needs. An ‘instructed tongue’ indicates that the Lord also enables us to understand the word and apply it appropriately. When a person wakes up in the morning and rushes to the word of God to rejuvenate himself, it is a perfect representation of the intended routine that God has for man- one of being woken up and taught by God. Once the word of God comes home, the disciple wraps himself with the word of God and responds to it, obeying it and living by it. When a disciple makes that his routine, he will never fail to be strong as he navigates life’s challenges.

It is also good to consider what would happen if the most valuable word of God would no longer be available. Amos warns us,

“The days are coming”, declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land- not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. Men will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it.” (Amos 8:11,12).

No catastrophe can compare with the one of losing God’s word, for men will then be reduced to staggering creatures, without purpose and rest, having no sustenance and no joy. How great the responsibility one has today to value the word and respond to it!
