LIVING BY THE INVISIBLE

All visionaries, inventors and explorers who achieve greatness, see what is impossible, and then put in the hard work to make it happen. Christian life is no different. Peter says,

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1Peter 1:8,9)

How can you love someone you do not see? It begins with man’s innate ability to connect to God, who is hidden behind the self-made mirages of this physical world, nevertheless no less real. The one who follows his deepest instincts will certainly find the reality of God, who becomes more and more a certainty as efforts are made to create a relationship with this Creator God. That effort culminates in finding Jesus Christ, who throws open the door of life and light, hurling man in to the lap of God.

This God who loves, cares, guides and nourishes our souls becomes the object and giver of the love relationship that follows. And we find that even though we don’t physically see him, he is nonetheless real, in fact more real than the physical things that swarm our lives. Because, when we believe, we find ourselves, with an expressible joy that transcends the happiness that life brings. It is as though we move from the light of a candle to the brilliance of the sun in the presence of God and in our belief of him.

It is this joy that portends what is to come- resurrection after death and eternal life, the reality of which we realize, we already are experiencing when the nature of God and his attributes of love, peace and joy fill our lives. How can we ignore such a great salvation? How can we put away the brilliance of the sun and remain in the fading candlelight of our earthly lives? When the invitation comes time and again to settle deeper in faith into the embrace of the invisible God, can we any longer refuse?
