ANGELS AMIDST US

Almost everyone would have come across stories of angels intervening in the lives of ordinary people, providing protection, guidance and hope. Angels have been encountered in various forms. One story recounts how 2 small boys who were lost in the mountain were led back to their parents by a deer, which spoke to them, reassured them and guided them back to their parents. Multiple stories exist of people caught in deserted places at night, being accosted by strangers with evil intentions, suddenly finding a person who appears out of nowhere and rescues them, driving the stranger away.What does the Bible tell us about angels? Let’s consider one crucial verse,

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?(Hebrews 1:14)

Even though the Bible tells us that when compared to humans, though angels are placed higher in the hierarchy of created beings, their role assigned by God is to serve the saints. Saints refer to those who belong to God, who have been chosen for eternal life and those who have received Christ and live for him. This is an indication of the importance God gives to those who belong to him! Surely, there are other roles for spiritual beings in God’s scheme of things, but angels are a reference to spiritual beings that take on physical form and their assigned role is to serve the saints.

The Bible reminds us that angels can take on diverse forms,

In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits,and his servants flames of fire.”(Hebrews 1:7)

Abraham’s story in the Bible contains references to angels visiting him, talking to him, warning him, and also eating with him. The same happened to Lot. The angels had physical form, helped Lot when the riotous crowd closed in on him, protecting him and then helped Lot and members of his family who were willing to listen to him, escape the judgment that they inflicted on Sodom and Gomorrah.

We need to remember that ultimately angels are spiritual beings who owe their complete allegiance to God and serve man only because God so directs them. It is a believer’s connection with God and his willingness to serve God and depend on him, crying out to him for help that paves the way for angels to ultimately be made available at critical moments in one’s life. Living a life of communion with God, and being open to being led by God makes it possible for angels to be available in one’s day-to-day life.
