THE ELUSIVE SATISFACTION

‘Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days’ (Psalms 90:14)

Take a moment to consider. When you wake up in the morning each day, are you satisfied? Is there gladness in your heart? Or is it a wakening up the reality of another miserable day ahead? Or is it the painful realization that the weekend joys that you have partaken of did not satisfy, rather left you empty and weary?

This reflective psalm was written by Moses, a man of God who was led to experience both suffering and the power of God in ways that few men could even dream of experiencing. He begins by talking of a God who reigns from eternity and controls all life on earth. In contrast is the life of man that withers away like a breath. Our lives shine, but only for a moment. And most alarming fact is that most of our life is spent in sorrow and pain. The reason for that is not hard to find;

‘We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan’ (Psalms 90:7-9).

When man who has been created to live in close conjugation with God, breaks that relational dependence, suffering and pain is inevitable. We live and suffer through it.

The alternative is to come back to God through Christ and re-establish that relationship and grow in it so that we can once again recapture the joy of living. Streams of living water flow out from Jesus, the author of life, bringing back the joy and gladness. It is when that relationship blossoms that we understand to number our days. When most of life is lived out as though we would never die, how mistaken we are! Yet when we receive the perspective of death and eternal life, life here on earth becomes meaningful.

When we lean on to God, we see the favor of God resting upon us and establishing the work of our hands- making it not just a fleeting event, rather making it eternally relevant. Our decision to live for God and move in accordance with his will brings us to a point of being satisfied, of having a heart of wisdom and indeed singing with gladness as we wake up each morning.
